Healing Karmic Comfort Zones Through the Moon and IC

Do you know the safety signatures in your chart?

Lately, I’ve been having a lot of conversations about the part of you that’s always trying to keep you safe. These talks usually revolve around trauma, OCD, bad habits, and more. These parts of you aren’t interested in growth—they’re focused on survival, keeping you the same.

In my own life, through years of inner work, I’ve found that my safety signatures constantly kept me performing, people-pleasing, perfecting, and leaking my boundaries. This always led me to one place: anger.

I was searching for belonging, and when that belonging felt threatened, I would betray my own sovereignty to fit in.

This left me with a burned-out nervous system, a mind that couldn’t stop ruminating, and a list of "dis-ease" symptoms no medical doctor could diagnose.

The root of my problems wasn’t physical, although they manifested that way. My issues were deeply spiritual, psychological, and embedded in my energy body. I was constantly trying to perfect things, carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders, feeling bitter that I had to do so much. Thoughts like, "If I don’t do it, no one will" and "They’ll just do it wrong, so I’ll do it myself" became the soundtrack of my life. (And, honestly, I still fall into those thoughts sometimes.)

My safety signatures, illuminated in my chart, screamed, “I do not feel secure.” This left me overworked, underpaid, and constantly seeking external validation. This was my deepest cosmic wound, especially as someone with a Leo stellium. I was blocked from creating what I wanted, trapped in what I thought the world wanted me to create.

Can you relate?

Not everyone has wounds around safety and stability, but we all have energies keeping us from stepping out of our karmic comfort zones. Each of us carries a unique cosmic blueprint.

These parts of you trying to protect you aren’t “bad”; they simply haven’t learned how to express their highest potential. They’re trying to nurture and shield you in the only way they know how—by keeping you where you are. Moving beyond your familiar self feels like a threat to survival. Even if you’re not thriving where you are, you know how to exist there. The unknown is scary.

Somewhere in your life—maybe in your money story, health, relationships, or work—there’s a place where you feel stuck. Astrology can help us locate where these parts come from, both in this life and as echoes from other lifetimes, embedded in your ancestral and cosmic DNA.

The easiest place to begin is with your Moon placement and your Imum Coeli (IC). These are the root systems of your chart, holding ingrained patterns, ancestral karma, and habits tied to protection (the Moon, Cancer, 4th House, IC).

These are what I call your Karmic Comfort Zones (along with your South Node, but that’s another story for another time).

Cancer, the Moon, the 4th House, and the IC are all linked to protection. And with protection comes fear. The area of life where you seek to stay the same often stems from these zones.

Think of it like this: Your birth chart reveals where you carry both karmic baggage and mastery. You’ve become so good at embodying certain energies that you default to their low octave because it takes less effort.

For example:

  • The Leo Moon wants to be validated, seen, and celebrated, so they put on a performance to get the attention they crave.

  • The Cancer Moon wants to be loved, protected, and nourished, so they bend their boundaries to stay close to their people, even if it costs them their sovereignty.

When trauma or long-term stress hits, we develop coping mechanisms, like compulsive behaviours (e.g., OCD) or emotional detachment, as a way to shield ourselves from perceived threats. Understanding these survival patterns through your Moon placement and IC can reveal where these safety patterns have taken root in your psyche.

This is often the perfect storm for “dis-ease,” as the metaphysical, emotional upheaval finds its way into the body. This is why the Moon holds so much potential for illness in medical astrology. These safety signatures contain both wounding and medicine. Your chart offers the potential to balance the energies, work with the zodiac, and integrate embodiment practices and shamanic healing.

What lies beyond your comfort zone?

Within your Moon and IC placements, you can find what you need to feel nourished, safe, and secure.

Outside of karmic astrology, the Moon is a powerful placement to access deep self-care and support your unmet needs.

The IC, one of my favourite “therapy” placements, shows what environment you need to create peace for yourself. This is where you retreat from the world (your Midheaven) and access a deeply private realm.

The goal is to understand the ancestral karma and safety signatures that keep you stuck in mental loops and use them to identify what will bring healing and medicine into your private sphere.

So, I’ll ask again: What lies beyond your comfort zone?

Start by asking what your Moon and IC are craving in order to feel safe, then identify where in your life you fall into the low octave of those energies to compensate for a lack of support.

Where can you build a stronger foundation?
